HOW YOUR DRINKS ARE AFFECTING YOUR TEETH
Why does acidity matter??
Acid is what causes the break-down, and eventually holes (cavities) in your teeth! Most drinks contain acid. Some drinks also contain sugar, which gets converted to acid in your mouth by bacteria.
When you start drinking something acidic/sugary, your mouth becomes acidic, and stays acidic the whole time you are drinking it! It then takes 30 minutes after you finish drinking for your mouth to return to neutral pH.
This is a big problem for people who sip their drinks, as they experience prolonged exposure to acid!! It is better to drink acidic and sugary drinks quickly, or avoid them altogether!
Some interesting notes on pH:
Yes, Dasani water is acidic! Go for a different brand of bottled water that has a neutral, or basic pH, if possible!
Seltzer, or sparkling water, is acidic! It is carbonated, so it contains carbonic acid.
As always, ask me any questions and share any tips you have, too!
